"Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium Collection: History of Modern Belgian Paintings" Exhibition

Sompo Museum of Art
Finished
Belgium, located in the northwestern part of Europe, has been home to skilled painters as far back as the time when it was still referred to as Flanders. Artists such as Van Eyck, Bruegel, Rubens and Van Dyke produced many representative works of European painting.

From the beginning of the 19th century, artists in the country took in the movements of neighboring France, such as realism, impressionism and fauvism, and developed a unique Belgian style which can be seen in works such as landscapes utilizing the cold northern climate, intimate room portraits and elegant decorative art.

This exhibition shows the path that Belgian art took in the 19th century through approximately 70 oil paintings of Belgian and French artists from the collection of Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
