Eiho Hirezaki
Born in Tokyo in 1880, Eiho Hirezaki became a disciple of ukiyo-e painter Toshihide Migita at the age of 17. Distinguishing himself as a nihonga painter, Hirezaki also made his mark as an illustrator and later came to dedicate his career to book illustrations.
Working for various magazines and newspapers, Hirezaki won many plaudits especially for his illustrations of sumo wrestlers featured in Tokyo Asahi Shimbun. Although his name was once forgotten after his passing, recent years have seen the reevaluation of his pioneering contributions to the genre.
Through a total of 350 works including previously unexhibited pieces, this exhibition looks back on the feat of this singular artist.
