This exhibition presents some 180 works selected from the collection of the Bridgestone Museum of Art. They include examples ranging from the Impressionists to contemporary artists, with paintings and sculptures by Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Takeji Fujishima, Tsuguharu Fujita, and other prominent artists. The exhibition is organized into four sections: I. The Birth of Impressionism and Post-Impressionist Movements; II. The Rise of Twentieth-Century Art; III. The Emergence and Development of Abstract Paintings; and IV. The History of Japanese Western-style Painting. The exhibits include masterly watercolors and pastels that the museum usually refrains from displaying, in order to conserve them, including Crescent Moon over Vence by Marc Chagall, After the Bath by Edgar Degas, Moulin Rouge, La Goulue by Toulouse-Lautrec and Seated Portrait of Reiko with a Doll, by Ryusei Kishida. This exhibition presenting the breadth and diversity of the collection will offer an opportunity to encounter a favorite masterpiece.
