During WWII in 1941, the Gunma Art Association was founded by nihonga painter Sokyu Isobe, yoga painter Kakujiro Yokobori, craft artist Torizo Morimura and Suiun Komuro, who became a director of the association. Mustering Gunma-based artists of all genres, the group played an active role in holding exhibitions for a decade during and after the war.

Launched in 1950 with the Gunma Art Association as its parent organization, the Gunma Prefecture Art Exhibition (Ken-ten) marks its 60th anniversary this year. In commemoration of this occasion, this exhibition features a wide variety of artists, ranging from the founding members of the association to those who are still currently active, taking a look back at 60 years of Ken-ten history.
