"Original Lithograph: Dream and Revolution of Artists and MMG 1974-2007" Exhibition

Utsunomiya Museum of Art
Finished
Original lithography is a type of printmaking where, instead of borrowing an image from a painting and making reproduction of it, an artist creates a work from scratch, from engraving to printing, with the help of a printing studio. Atelier MMG, located in Higashi Azabu, Tokyo, is a sister studio of, and has technical partnership with Atelier Mourlot in Paris, which was frequented by renowned artists like Picasso and Chagall.

While the production of original lithographs provides an artist with an opportunity to tackle the unknown on paper, it is also a bruising battle with a stone, demanding collaborative work between the artist and atelier. Since its opening in 1974, Atelier MMG has been involved in the production of distinguished lithographs. Moreover, they opened a gallery in 1991 and exhibited the works created in the atelier, while also actively introducing as-yet-unknown artists. In 2007, however, MMG put an end to their 33 years of activity.

This exhibition was made possible by the numerous donations of noncommercial prints to the museum. Although it is impossible to exhaustively exhibit a vast number of works at once, the exhibition offers a great opportunity for the viewers to deepen the understanding of this particular medium through the display of handpicked stellar pieces.
