"Disposed Cars - Plaisu 2009"

Our society is currently seeing an increase in concern and awareness for putting various environmental initiatives into place.

The Readymade Committee is developing a series of projects that aim to make effective use of waste materials, as well as initiate various resource-saving measures, based on the theme of products that help to reduce C02 emissions. The committee has brought together a team of designers with a strong interest in recycling and sustainable methods, who make proposals for reusing materials. Last year, they held the Open Plaisu Exhibition 2008, which focused on reusing mass-produced chairs.

This year, the theme is decommissioned cars. Currently, Japan generates about 4 million of these disposed cars every year. Although many are dismantled according to recycling laws stipulated by various automobile manufacturers, materials that are difficult to put to other uses are simply discarded. While the call to switch to hybrid cars that are easier on the environment has been getting stronger, there is still the looming problem of what to do with these disposed cars.

This exhibition showcases products that have been designed using recycled parts that have a low individual use value, taken from a pool of over 30,000 automobile components and other waste materials.
