Perhaps the other side of the world beats to a different time...

In contrast to Europe and Japan, afflicted by poverty in the wake of the second World War, Uruguay, along with Argentina, enjoyed untold prosperity. Unfortunately, this small country, sometimes called the Switzerland of South America, soon came under military rule and fell victim to economic collapse, the start of a downhill trend.

"His" family, with its well-respected lineage that produced Diet members and military leaders, declined along with the country's failing fortunes, passing away one by one. "He," previously the highest authority in the legal department of the Ministry for Home Affairs, remained single all along. After his aunt passed away, "he" became the last remaining survivor of the family.

Living all alone in the family "mansion," Jose led a quiet existence, shutting up his family's glorious past in the house and watching over it, confining himself voluntarily in the ancestral home.

32 color and 8 monochrome photos.
