"Our World at War" Exhibition

YCC Yokohama Creative City Center
Finished
This year marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Red Cross philosophy. At the Battle of Solferino which took place in Northern Italy in 1859 and ended in only 9 hours, 6000 soldiers died, while the number of wounded, missing and those taken captive amounted to 35,000. After witnessing this catastrophic event, Swiss businessman Jean Henri Dunant immediately mobilized a rescue party with the surrounding villagers in order to treat the injured. After returning to Geneva, the Red Cross and its ideals were born, the result of Dunant's wish to aid wounded soldiers in war, regardless of their side or country. In 1863, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was founded as the first Red Cross institution.

The birth of photographic technology coincided with the founding of the ICRC. To end all unnecessary suffering and pain brought about by war - this has been the common theme for 150 years shared by those who devote themselves to humanitarian activities and those who continue to take photographs of battlefields.

This collaborative project between the ICRC and the internationally-renowned photojournalist group "VII (seven)" is being held to commemorate its 150th anniversary. These photographers, who have won a number of awards, visited 8 nations* to capture on film the suffering of various populations such as sexually assaulted women, families that have lost their home, and those threatened by organized criminal groups. (*Afghanistan, Colombia, Congo, Georgia, Lebanon, Liberia, Haiti, and the Philippines)

The photographs on view attest to the fact that the tragedies brought about by today's wars and conflicts are no different from those of the time of Solferino. They also speak of the tireless efforts of common people who strive to alleviate the suffering of war victims.
