We are pleased to announce the opening of Miki Kubota's first exhibition at hpgrp Gallery Tokyo, "Deshadowed and Swelling".

The sense of volume in furniture which relates to the human body is key to an understanding of Kubota’s work. She fills the negative spaces of furniture with plywood and wood filler, and then sands to get a smooth surface. A color field of plywood and wood filler appears on the polished surface, suggesting abstract painting. These furniture pieces give the impression of being “buried”.

Kubota’s work contains two aspects - the actual form that exists in front of you, and the form that becomes an “image." At this exhibition, Kubota considers the issue of planes and volume. Please enjoy these new works by Kubota, who has exhibited widely at established art organizations such as Shiseido Art Egg, Tokorozawa Biennale and Tokyo Wonder Site.
