"Exploration of Images -Book Illustrations by the 20th Century Masters" Exhibition

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall et al.
Avant-garde artists of the 20th century such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall explored forms of artistic expression that straddled multiple genres throughout their lives, creating not only paintings but also prints, ceramics and more. In the mid-20th century, with the rise of art dealers and publishers like Vollard and Schilla, the world of extravagant book illustrations entered its golden age. Centering on France, "artist's books" started to flourish with abundant illustrations selected by painters of the time.

With a focus on works housed in the Urawa Art Museum, which is known for its picture book collection, this exhibition introduces various notable pieces including Matisse's "Jazz", Chagall's "Daphnis and Chloé" and Picasso's "Dream and Lie of Franco". In addition, a total of 210 works including oil paintings that address themes like "Dancers and Circus", "Tales to be Told" and "My Homeland" will be on view.
