"A Survey of American Film History Part2: From the National Film Center Collection" Screening

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
Supported by the George Eastman House, a photography and film museum in Rochester, the National Film Center acquired the Warner Brothers' 16mm print collection in 2002 and 2003. The collection consists of late 1920s to prewar era "talkie" films produced by Warner Bros. and MGM, including many films that haven't been released in Japan.

Covering a wide range of genres and featuring many movie stars, "A Survey of American Film History Part 2" presents a total of nine films, including the melodrama "Mata Hari" featuring Greta Garbo, "Tarzan, The Ape Man" which led Johnny Weissmuller to stardom, the Screwball comedy "Libeled Lady", "The Good Earth" a film with vigorous depictions of nature, and more. The program focuses on valuable American films created in the transitional period of the 1930s, when motion pictures with synchronized sound became a new standard.

*All the works to be screened are 16mm films in English, without Japanese subtitles. Handouts containing summaries of each film are available at the theater.
