"Naked Design" Exhibition

Gallery Claska
Finished
This exhibition features a unique collection of recycled and substitute aluminum products on display and for sale, assembled by Seiji Onishi.

Post-WWII, aluminum, which was widely used for making military supplies during the war, became diverted for use in manufacturing daily necessities and objects amid widespread material poverty. Metals in particular were in drastically short supply, and many iron tools and objects were manufactured using ceramics and by reusing Duralumin (an alloy made of aluminum, copper and other metals) taken from the remains of fighter aircraft. In this way, large quantities of daily necessities and products could be manufactured.

Onishi is well-known in antique and secondhand furniture circles as a collector, although he is himself an industrial designer by occupation. This exhibition of "naked design" showcases a wealth of objects from a postwar Japan only just beginning to recover from economic ruin, issued forth not from the designers, but rather industrial factories of the country.
