Tove Marika Jansson
Tove Marika Jansson, creator of the Moomin, was born in 1914 as the eldest daughter to a sculptor rather and illustrator mother. Her illustrations and poems were published in a magazine when she was 14, and the satirical magazine Garm that her mother Signe was involved with at the age of 15. She continued to draw for this magazine until it ceased publication in 1953. Afterwards, illustrations of the well-loved Moomin troll were published in more than 30 countries. The Moomin made its first appearance in the pages of Garm in 1943. Later, Jansson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, the Athenaeum Art School in Helsinki, and art schools in Paris. When Jansson returned to Finland at the age of 24, she received the Hans Christian Andersen Award among others that would contribute to a flourishing career.
The Moomin series consists of a total of 9 stories. The innocent, childlike Moomins run into various incidents in the course of their journey. Although the Moomin family seem stable, quiet and an ideal model, quarrels and conflicts intervene, while they manage to overcome difficulties, thus making them a stronger family for it. The adventures they run into are full of excitement and anticipation, and the Moomins' wisdom, humor and warmth transcended differences in culture and language to become loved all over the world.
This exhibition features original illustrations and sketches from the Museum of Art and Moomin Museum in Tampere, as well as a 3D Moomin model (that was originally not supposed to leave the premises of the museum), on display for the first time in Japan.
