From beautiful mountains to rivers, lakes and the ocean, landscapes have been a common subject of Japanese art throughout history. From gorgeously colored yamato-e and the spiritual landscape painting style adopted from Chinese painting, to various styles established in and after the Edo period, landscape painting became a very important and familiar form of art.

For instance, in the mid Edo period, people began to further appreciate everyday scenery. This can be considered a shift which occurred as a result of a search for a new aesthetic, giving birth to new styles combined with a traditional art form. Painters such as Jakuchu Ito and Shohaku Soga recognized the significance of originality, developing their signature styles in depicting landscapes. Each artist had their own motivations to create a landscape painting. While one depicted daily life in nature, another created paintings as a way to express awe toward nature, feelings and stories of traveling, and a longing for unreachable foreign countries. These works represent various attitudes and feelings that people carried in the Edo period.

This exhibition focuses on landscape paintings created by a wide variety of painters from the Edo period. The works include Shohaku Soga's sansui-ga (a Japanese term referring to classical landscape painting), Jakuchu Ito's rare landscape painting, works by Kano-ha (Kano school) and Maruyama Shijo-ha painters, yamato-e, works by notable scholars, yo-ga (western style painting), and ukiyo-e.
