Koen Vanmechelen
Koen Vanmechelen was born in Sint-Truiden, Belgium, in 1965.
Since a child, Vanmechelen has shown great interest in art, especially in sculpture, as well as in science, such that one of the first presents for the young artist was a chicken incubator.
He began very early to work on his project: to create a dialogue between art and science and through this dialogue to answer some of the fundamental questions of existence.
Vanmechelen's experimentation does not have precise boundaries, ranging from the themes of racism and globalization to the meaning of species and individual. To express himself, he uses a very personal multimedia language making use of video, photography, installations, painting and drawing – in other words, with the greatest variety of materials and techniques. The central role of his artistic work however has been given to sculpture, and especially glass sculpture.
All the different means that Vanmechelen uses to express himself are connected by the two subjects that are central to his work: the chicken and the egg. His artistic audacity in the fields of science, philosophy and ethics has produced various successful projects. First of all is the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, an ambitious attempt to create a new breed, a universal “Superbastard” chicken through the crossbreeding of all the chicken varieties that exist in the world. This project – the heart of Vanmechelen’s artistic and scientific experimentation – is divided into four sub-projects: Virtual Crossing, Experimental Crossing, The Walking Egg and The Accident.
In this show, Vanmechelen's new interesting works such as "Ectoplasma" and "Medusa" will be exhibited. Some of his new drawing/ collage and photograph will be also exhibited for the first time in Japan.
