"The Many Faces of Bird-and-Flower Paintings" Exhibition

Plants, birds, insects, etc., constitute the subject matter of bird-and-flower painting, one of the major genres of traditional Chinese painting. Established around the end of the Tang dynasty, bird-and-flower painting came to be used as decoration for celebratory occasions from the Song dynasty onward. This genre was emulated in Japan, where it underwent rapid development from the early modern era. Its varied expressions included idealized and decorative depictions of seasonal landscapes and customs. In addition, the strong realism brought to Japan by the Qing dynasty painter Shen Nanping had a profound influence on the painting of 18th century Edo. We hope that through the works on display you will be able to enjoy a small part of this rich world of bird-and-flower painting, not only in its appreciation of the seasons, but also for the variety of aspirations that it embodies.

Closed	Thursday Open on public holidays. Open every day during August. Closed in between exhibitions and during winter. May close in case of bad weather.

Access

10 minutes by taxi from Shibukawa Station on the JR Joetsu line; From JR Shibukawa Station, take the Kan-etsu Kotsu bus towards Ikaho Onsen and get off at Green Bokujo-mae. The venue is 7 minute walk from there.
