Tsuyoshi Higashijima is a leading Japanese painter who creates massive works measuring as big as 4 by 20 meters, covered with monochromatic paint such as dark blue or green. Facing the deep color field, the viewer is taken on a journey through profound tranquility. Occasionally, he places a symbol or words that appear like a diary scribbled on the surface, embedding his feelings and thoughts from the everyday on the solid color field.

A sense of distance, time and images that he acquired through his own physical experiences are visualized on Higashiyama's canvas. For instance, when he created a work in Aomori Prefecture, he drove three days from his home in Okayama Prefecture to get there, experiencing the actual distance between the two places, absorbing the atmosphere, history and memory of the area along the way. He also often works on his painting outdoors. Under the sun and the sky, surrounded by trees and the air, the solid color field reflects the natural light like a mirror, a reflection of the environment that is in flux as time passes by.

At this exhibition inside a white cube, a large canvas occupies the huge wall space, filling the gallery with the reality that Higashiyama experienced.

Artist Talk: June 1st (Mon), 18:00-19:00
