Yamato-uta poetry has long occupied a special place in ancient Japanese literature. The book of poetry was prepared under the direct order of the Emperor was therefore the most valued compilation of the best poetry of the time. It was also a source of honor for poets to be selected as editors for this book. Three generations of the Reizei family held this post and the family continues to be highly regarded as a family of poets. This exhibition showcases the essence of the documents and literature protected by the family for centuries. This is a rare chance to encounter the exact same books that were enjoyed by past Emperors.
