Katsutoshi Yuasa
Katsutoshi Yuasa creates prints unlike typical woodblock printmaking. His work is meticulously detailed and realistic, and upon a brief look, it may look like a monochrome photograph.

Yuasa starts with taking digital pictures of his motifs and copies the images onto a woodblock. He takes a long time to carve into the block, developing the photo-realistic surface. He uses ordinary motifs such as trees, gardens and residential scenes, and precisely picks up tones found in light and shadows. Oblique lines which look like rain cover the entire picture, creating a sense of seeing a still image from a video or a miniature painting. The smudged ink nostalgically creates an illusion of looking over a garden gently lit by moonlight.

In woodblock printmaking, the carved out portions remain white and the untouched parts are colored. Yuasa uses his senses to foresee the resulting image. Undermining the similarities between photography and printmaking, he maximizes what woodblock printmaking can covey. After graduating from art school, Yuasa, only 30 years old, has done residencies in Europe and America, developing his career as an artist. This exhibition presents 14 works he created when he stayed in Paris in 2008.
