Keisuke Yamamoto
Keisuke Yamamoto creates drawings, paintings, and wooden sculptures. His works consist of trees, plants, fungi, and small fairy-like dolls formed by organic lines joined to realize a single form. His painting allows our eyes to wander freely over its flat surface filled with colored planes that resemble flowers and insects, the sky, or an enormous forest. His sculptures also bear shapes of part of a forest or architectural structure. Compared to his early work that took familiar motifs in a concrete manner, Yamamoto's recent pieces assume more complex composition as if all images are melt together. "The act of painting is just like wandering in a bottomless world. Having realized that, I cannot stop painting now," says Yamamoto. True to his words, the most important element of his work is not a subject matter itself but rather the fragments of an uncertain realm.

This exhibition features Yamamoto's new paintings and a wooden sculpture measuring nearly five-meters in height. This massive work consists of about thirty parts representing faces, plants and mysterious decorative patterns, dazzling the audience with its palace-like presence. About the exhibition title "Rise", Yamamoto explains as follows; "One of the most important phenomena prompting my artistic production is to rise. Various components tangle and affect each other, collapsing at times in the process of making. While I manage to put all the parts together and build them up to form a piece of art, there is always some sorts of resistance and pressure fighting back against me. The more essential the content of the work is, the harder it gets for it to rise. Through such a process, I pause to realize the importance of this particular phenomenon."
