Artists

Miyako Ishiuchi
Born in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, Miyako Ishiuchi grew up in Yokosuka and started her career as a photographer in the late 1970s. Having exhibited in both Japan and abroad and also released photo books, she became one of the representative photographers of contemporary Japan. After winning attention with her printing style where cityscape, buildings and walls are portrayed in a coarse-grained texture as seen in her early series, Ishiuchi shifted her focus to the human body in the late 1980s, exploring the trajectory of life represented by scars and wrinkles imprinted on the body over time. She went on to establish her unswerving position in the field after the turn of the century, drawing international attention with a series of exhibitions among which "Mother's" (2002), the portrayal of her deceased mother's belongings, and "Hiroshima" (2008), the documentation of things left behind after Hiroshima atomic bombing, are notable.

This exhibition showcases a total of 120 photographs capturing the human body and relics, including a number of Ishiuchi's past series such as "1947" consisting of photographs of faces and limbs of women born in the same year as the artist, and "Scars" and "Innocence". Also on view are previously never exhibited "A to A" series which deals with transgender issues.
