Izuru Kasahara
After graduating from the art department of Tokyo University of the Arts, Kasahara helped to found the pioneering artist collaborative unit, Studio Shokudo, in 1994. She has shown her work widely at numerous solo and group exhibitions since the late 1990s.

Kasahara's works have consistently dealt with the theme of laughter. The motif of the "laughing ghost" - only a smiling mouth, without a nose or ears - has appeared repeatedly as a main element of her work. This simple grinning face, wearing a slightly ironical expression, occasionally comes across as detached and aloof, as if to question the phenomenon of laughter itself.

This exhibition showcases paintings with several of these "smiling ghosts" in the middle of actual landscapes.
