The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow owns over 100,000 works of art, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, but its centerpiece is the collection of late 19th and early 20th century masterpieces started by the museum's founder, the businessman Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov. From this collection, we have selected a number of works by Repin, Kramskoi, Shishkin and other representative Russian painters who were active between 1850 and the Russian Revolution. Besides scenes from everyday life or beautiful panoramas of majestic Russian nature, this exhibition also features portraits of famous writers like Chekhov, Tolstoy and Turgenev. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to trace the development of early modern Russian art from Realism to Impressionism.
