With the returning of Nobuo Moriya from Europe at the beginning of the 20th century along with rapid economic development and a rush of construction work in the '50s, interior design in Japan experienced a dramatic development as part of the "environmental arts" that was unprecedented in the world. This was especially true for commercial spaces such as restaurants, cafes and boutiques which became the locus of advanced expressive activity for designers such as Isamu Kenmochi, Takashi Sakaizawa and Shiro Kuramata.
About a century on, interior design may seem to be flourishing at first sight, but it is questionable whether it is enriching our daily lives. It seems as if the evolution of interior design has ceased and that it has become reduced to the mere listing of fashionable furniture and other interior items.
This lecture will provide a new perspective to rethink the relationship between everyday life and interior design by presenting "legendary" examples of commercial spaces that have become part of the history of design and by reconsidering the transition from the times of these works to the present. It is ideal for those who don't have particular knowledge about design and the lecture is designed so that it can also be enjoyed as a way to discover attractive commercial spaces.
