This event has ended.

"Kodomo no Kuni" was a Children's magazine published from 1922 to 1944 within the cultural climate characterized by the popularization of culture. Under the belief that the best that art could provide was crucial for the enrichment of children, the magazine brought together leading figures from different fields such as pedagogist Sozo Kurahashi, poets Hakushu Kitahara and Ujo Noguchi, composer Shinpei Nakayama and editor Masao Wada. Moreover, the emphasis put on the visual quality of the magazine was evident by the covers that employed painters of such caliber as Kiichi Okamoto (who was also the director of painting of the magazine), Takeo Takei, Yoshio Shimizu, Shiro Kawakami, Shigeru Hatsuyama, Shozo Fukazawa and Tomoyoshi Murayama.

This exhibition will explore the modernizing society of the period from the standpoint of a children's magazine that has become legendary in the field. The world of dreams created for the children reflected that of the adults themselves. The "modern" world that came to life on the hands of children will be explored through the prints of the illustrators.
