Toru Nakazaki

Toru Nakazaki is an outstanding artist born in 1976 who has been active all over Japan since dropping out of the doctoral program at Musashino Art University in 2007. In addition to his own artistic practice, Nakazaki's resume includes initiating various projects and art units. He first attracted attention as a "signboard artist" who produced kitsch signage. When these signboards are exhibited in one place, however, they take on a collective appearance that might even be called stylish or refined, lending a delicate balance to the gallery space. Nakazaki's works are born out of the attempt to aim intentionally at a coarse aesthetic.

According to Nakazaki, what he most wishes to express in his work is the process that leads to their creation and the systems that influence that process, and that he is "inclined to be concerned with the little events that give rise to the work itself." It is impossible to tell if the rows of words that seem to leap off the surface of Nakazaki's works have any meaning invested in them. What seems evident enough, however, are the traces of the artist's own thoughts that appear on the exterior of these seemingly meaningless objects.
