This exhibition comprises around 70 works by 14 current instructors in the oil painting department and over 100 works from the collection of the museum at the Tokyo University of the Arts. It is an attempt to define the notion of "ikai" (underworld) as a site for creative practice and to interrogate the notion of "landscape" as a medium of expression. The works on display suggest new approaches to and perspectives on painting derived from the artistic practice, research and educational activities of the university's painting instructors.

From the late Edo period until the Meiji era, the introduction of advanced laws of perspective along with bold interpretations of painting and a unique curiosity led to a nuanced understanding of Western painting methods. These works offer an alternative reading from a contemporary viewpoint of these experimental landscape paintings.
