Artists

Ryoko Aoki
Ryoko Aoki's colorful lines and drawings have earned her many fans both in Japan and abroad, winning her a stellar reputation as a young Japanese artist. Her work fuses girly motifs with folkloric references, creating an incredible sense of layout within the picture surface using a variety of elements. By turns pop and cynical, and inflected with an enigmatic humor, Aoki's drawings exude a sense of lightness that seems to expand way beyond the confines of the single sheet of paper they are drawn on.

Her first collection of works, "Chain Ring," was created based on the concept of making connections. This exhibition mixes drawings from this collection with newer works, further connecting the world of her art to the space of the gallery. On display is an installation consisting of several objects made out of broken and scrap wood, clay sculptures and numerous drawings scattered throughout the space. Stepping into the gallery, viewers may be reminded of a floating wonderland feeling that draws them in with a strange rhythm...

This is Aoki's first solo show in Tokyo in 4 years. In addition, Foil is releasing a book of her work, "Chain Ring", to coincide with the exhibition.
