Rei Naito "color beginning"

Artists

Rei Naito
In the past few years, Naito has been creating installations, sculptures and photographs based on matrices. This is her first solo exhibition in 4 years since her last solo show at Gallery Koyanagi in 2005, taking up and investigating the same theme through a selection of new paintings and sculptures based on the notion of "anima."

Among these works is the series of "Untitled" paintings started in 2006 that are being shown for the first time. These works are related to the "namenlos/Licht" drawings executed in red pencil on paper that Naito has been working on continuously since 1993. They also reflect a new consciousness of the matrix theme and fresh discoveries pertaining to color.

The title of this exhibition, "color beginning," refers to a hue that is continuously starting to emerge, or repeatedly taking shape, and derives from a small watercolor by Turner from 1819. This is color understood within the framework of a matrix, and also refers to Naito's own first foray into investigations of color. For Naito, both matrices and colors and always and simultaneously "continuing to begin, and continuing to emerge." Matrices are states of unconsciousness that exist outside of life, before birth and after death, transcending the mortal realm while yet being an omnipresent part of it; in short, a form of free and pure continuity.
