Artists

Kenji Ichikawa
Since making his debut as an artist in the late 1990s, Kenji Ichikawa has won several awards and held numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, establishing him as a first-rate contemporary artist with a solid, proven career.

"Most of my work is created by cutting out images from 'readymade' printed matter and pasting them together." Ichikawa's practice consists in accumulating and reassembling fragments of preexisting images by hand. Some of these fragments include highly charged and symbolic images of lips and breasts, while others carry entirely inorganic appearances, more akin to a plant or an architectural structure.

These countless fragments, accumulated through a stubborn process of repetition, become distorted through the filter of the artist and present an entirely new image. Ichikawa's 2D works and installation spaces are constructed without a single gap between them - a gesture of craftsmanship that can be read as a sort of resistance to the image manipulation accomplished through digital technology.
