Akinori Shimodaira
Akinori Shimodaira is a young up-and-coming painter born in 1974. After graduating from Tokyo Zokei University, he based himself mainly in Tokyo where he continues to work today.

Most of the motifs found in Shimodaira's painting were discovered through image searches on the Internet: photographs of strangers of all races and nationalities. Taking these images as his starting point, Shimodaira paints fudged figures whose expressions are not clearly discernible. From their position, however, the confidential and private sense of distance directed towards us is tangible. In addition, the faded and pale colors of the picture surface and its motley assortment of anonymous characters, even if derived from unrelated random photographs, seem nonetheless to possess a shared, common worldview. Shimodaira's paintings seem to visualize numerous scenes from a single fairytale.

Faced with these works, even if for the first time, one is assailed by a strange sensation of affinity, as if these characters and the landscapes they find themselves in have long been familiar to the viewer.

This series of paintings is a new direction for Shimodaira, different in style to his previous work. As the title of the exhibition indicates, these are spaces that he seems to have just managed to recall.
