Kofu Ishii "Youth in Paris"

Chiba City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Kofu Ishii
Kofu Ishii (1892-1975) was born to a family of fishermen in what is now Isumi, Chiba prefecture. He entered the world of painting through learning Japanese painting first, but later shifted his interest to Western painting and began to receive critical acclaim through being accepted to prominent art exhibitions.

However, finding it limitative to learn Western painting in Japan, he seeks new inspiration in America, being enrolled in the Chicago Art Institute (1921) and later at the Academie Julian in Paris, France (1925). His works of this period shine with his youthful and honest feelings that reflected the young energy of Paris of that time characterized by such personalities as Tsuguharu Fujita. Ishii's works began to receive attention in Paris too and to be accepted at numerous salons.

Amongst the works that were kindly donated by his family, the exhibition will mainly focus on his works produced during his stay in Europe and America to retrace his oeuvre.
