Japanese Painting Department Second Division Drawing Exhibition

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
Exhibition of drawings by both students and instructors in the second division of the Japanese painting (nihonga) department.

"Sobyo" (rough sketches) seem to be objective depictions of their subjects, but they also transcribe the latent true character of the artist. These drawings convey what we observe about all manner of objects and situations encountered over the course of daily life. If drawing is an act of reconstructing symbols from memory, it is also an emotional and mental emblem that springs from our imaginations and thought processes.

Depending on artist's objectives and motivations, a "sketch" can also equally be called a draft, a drawing, a dessin, a croquis or an esquisse. Although these are definitely not synonyms, they are typically used almost interchangeably. Sketches attempt to seize in a straightforward manner, using lines and contours, both the visible and psychological form of the chosen subject.
