The Shoto Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Liao Xiuping, Jiang Mingxian
Father of Taiwanese printmaking Liao Xiuping was born in Taipei in 1936 and graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University, and later studied at Tokyo University of Education as well as Paris and New York. In 1977, he came to Japan again, and became a professor of printmaking at Tsukuba University. He received a number of prizes at international exhibitions such as the Tokyo Printmaking Biennale and Sao Paulo International Printmaking Exhibition. Jiang Mingxian was born in Taichung in 1942, and after graduating from the National Taiwan Normal University, he spent some years studying in Spain, studying Western aesthetics. He combines watercolor techniques he learned in Europe with traditional sumi-ink practices in order to develop a new form of ink drawing.

This exhibition presents works by these two leading artists from Taiwan, tracing the history of postwar Taiwanese art.
