"What Lurks in Wood" Exhibition

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Heihachi Hashimoto, Keizaburo Okamura et al.
Since the ancient times Japanese people have found something supernatural in trees, and have used them for producing various images including Buddhist statues. Even after the Meiji period (1868-1912) when such production waned, many artists found some exceptional quality in wood as a material to work with, and explored its possibility. This show features such attempts from works by Heihachi Hashimoto to more recent pieces, mainly from the museum collection.
