After holding her debut solo show "Natsumegiku" at Yamamoto Gendai in Tokyo in 2006, Fukaya participated in the ArtChinaKoreaJapanArt exhibition (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Italy) that same year, as well as the "Roppongi Crossing" exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo in 2007. This September, Fukaya showed at City Net Asia 2009 (Seoul Museum of Art, South Korea). This is her first solo show in three years, featuring new copperplate prints and drawings.
Fukaya's works depict living things in astounding detail. She spares no effort in portraying the most intricate details - single strands of fur, small scales on a fish, patterns on flower petals, the richly colorful patterns of a butterfly's wing. Her choice of copperplate prints (etchings) was based on the medium's ability to capture extremely subtle and delicate nuances using fine lines. She says that even a lens would get in the way of her work, so she uses her naked eye to observe her chosen subjects, which she turns into works that are a sort of eulogy to life itself, with their free-spirited, vivacious living creatures.
Her new work, Untitled (27), depicts a community of organisms living together underground - from fossils and ammonite to mammals, birds, fish, plants and other imaginary creatures. This motley assortment seems to have transcended divisions between earth, sea and sky - not to mention time - but the beauty of Fukaya's work lies in how the myriad carved lines and dots succeed in not making the viewer feel that something in this impossible world is amiss.
Compared to many large-scale works of contemporary art, most of Fukaya's works are small, measuring less than 30x30cm. A rich world lies tightly condensed within the confines of this space, however, and viewers can spend hours looking at a single work, appreciating its detail and technical skill. Also on display are works that Fukaya made after paying a visit to the island of Yakushima.
