Special summer lecture series

- Film history
Film and video have now become familiar media thanks to the widespread use of video equipment. Important historical movements include the turn towards experimental film as an art form distinct from those produced by the "film industry," and the emergence of adventurous pioneers working in the medium. This lecture traces the course of this alternative film history through 20th century avant-garde films, postwar American underground film and new contemporary video art.

- Condensed lectures on avant-garde video art
Art history has opened a fresh page amid the chaos of its contemporary developments. New artists who tackle fresh challenges, new forms of aesthetics and multidisciplinary genre crossings are pushing the boundaries of the genre. Art, music, computer technologies and bodily expressions have also been crossing over and exerting an influence on contemporary narrative film.

- Animation workshops
The particular appeal of animation lies in its ability to bestow new vitality on lifeless subjects, animate them and create a world out of that sense of emptiness. This workshop will employ various techniques - on-the-spot filming, line drawing, cell animation and 3D animation - to teach participants more about the creative process. Students are free to tackle anything they wish - storyboard writing, experimental work, image templates, production, etc.

See website for more details on these lectures and downloadable application forms (Japanese only).
