Coal mines made a major contribution to the modernization of the pre-war industries, as well as to Japan's postwar economic revival and high growth. This exhibition attempts to retrace the various issues related to coal mines through an examination of how they were represented in visual culture. An installation by Tadashi Kawamata will be on view, presenting the results of his "Coalmine Tagawa" project.
