Hermann Gabler's paintings are objects. But there is also an object painted onto the canvas, sometimes alongside a text. The text can be a sentence, a single word or a name. These elements stand each on its own right within the painting, yet experience finds that they still interact on both a concrete and a metaphorical level. This is what invites exploration. This is where the painting's ambivalent surface turns out to be the body of interpretation. This is Gabler's first exhibition in Japan.
