Hpgrp gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Oshie (Doctrine)", Tadaomi Shibuya's third exhibition at the gallery. Shibuya paints unique motifs with sharp, straight lines. In this exhibition, he visualizes the essence of "Japanese-ness" as a doctrine that structures him. Shibuya states that "many of today's Japanese people, myself included, may seem to be removed from religious faith, but it is in fact fused into everyday life in the shape of doctrines, manners or custom. I was formed as a "Japanese" person from that envrironment." Shibuya feels that his works may have the same importance in contemporary society as idols once had in religious society. Influenced by hip-hop, black culture and his travels to India, Nepal and Thailand, Shibuya embarked on a search for his own sense of nationality.
