Kenji Yanobe
Contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe's practice is based on the concept of "future ruin" (the prospect of the resplendent, massive pavilions at the 1970 Osaka World Expo being laid to waste, that he witnessed firsthand). He creates machine-like sculptures equipped with various functions and features, using solid technological knowledge to support his larger-than-life ingenious inventions. Torayan is a character created by Yanobe in a protective yellow suit meant to shield three year-olds against radioactivity, with a barcode head and a small mustache. This humorous yet cynical character occupies a strange middle ground between Yanobe's fictional world and reality, with an adorable expression sings the Polish folk song "Let's Go to the Forest," multiplies into miniature versions of itself, sometimes transforming itself into a huge fire-breathing robot.

This exhibition features lithographs from Yanobe's first picture book, "Torayan's Big Adventure" (2007), a collection of stories about dolls and sun paintings discovered at a kindergarten in Chernobyl and put together over a period of some ten years. This book contains messages of hope for the future dreams of children and the adults who support them, including chapters like "Torayan Picks Up a Little Sun," each lovingly illustrated by hand by Yanobe himself. In addition, small glass suns and Torayan figures manufactured by Biriken Inc (known for their Atom Boy and Ultraman toys), representing hope and dreams for the future, will also be on display.
