Tokuro Sakamoto
Tokuro Sakamoto was born in Shioyama, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1975. After graduating from the nihonga deparment at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999, he enrolled in the nihonga painting seminar at Hayami Geijutsu Gakuen until 2001. Since graduating he has been holding exhibitions both in Japan and abroad as well as exhibiting actively at art fairs.

Sakamoto's painterly world consists of tranquil, everyday scenes tinged with nostalgia. His chosen motifs are familiar to anyone - playground equipment standing in a park in the early afternoon, swan boats gliding quietly over the surface of a lake, scenery glimpsed from the window of a speeding car. Despite the quotidian nature of these motifs, there is also something unique, dream-like and extraordinary about them - time seems to have stopped, or else appears as if it will continue eternally. Amid the restless routine of everyday life, once in a while you stop to notice places that you typically pass right by.

In this exhibition, Sakamoto tries his hand at copperplate printmaking, a shift away from the acrylic painting he has worked with previously. The lines and surfaces of these paintings are laid out with a slightly higher level of contrast than usual, giving rise to distinctive silhouettes. These forms prompt an uncanny sense of deja vu in the viewer - we seem to have seen them somewhere before at some point. The ink from the copperplates pressed onto the paper, with its bleeding colors and subtle traces left behind on the paper by the printing process, gives an additional layer of depth to the work. The accumulation of lines that have been scratched and carved onto the plate with a slender needle also convey something of the palpable sense of time and effort that the artist devoted to this "painting." This is Sakamoto's first print exhibition.
