Travel has long been a deep-rooted theme of photography. In Japan, ever since photography was introduced at the end of the Edo period, many works that are deeply related to the theme of travel have been created. These three consecutive exhibitions featuring work in chronological order, from the early age of photography up to the present, draws on photographic works exclusively from the museum's own collection.
Part 1 "To the East - Journey of 19th Century Photography"
May 16th (Sat) - July 12th (Sun)
From the end of Edo period to the mid-Meiji period, hand-colored photographs of various places were created as souvenirs for foreigners visiting Japan. Along with the photographs, the historical background of these works is on display. They represent an early form of photography in Japan, and at the same time, reveal how Japan was perceived by the "world".
Part 2 "Journey to a Strange Land"
July 18th (Sat) - September 23rd (Wed)
In part 2, Japanese landscapes captured by Japanese photographers are on display. As the transportation system developed, sightseeing became popular and cameras became a must-have item. Photography became a tool to document one's travels, but gradually, some photographers began to address a psychological landscape by means of photography. Seeing an ordinary landscape as a "strange land" brings about a journey of self-reflection.
Part 3 "Travel Abroad"
September 29th (Tue) - November 23rd (Mon)
The final series presents visions of foreign countries by Japanese photographers. From scenes of Paris taken by Shinzo Fukuhara, whose work was influenced by pictorialism, to lively snapshots of foreign cityscapes by Kazuo Watanabe, works by those who built the foundations of Japanese photography are on display.
