On the Earth Project is a social participatory project initiated by students of Joshibi University of Art and Design, with the collaboration of students from Sagamihara City Futaba Elementary School.
In November 2008, a workshop to create cardboard houses was held, followed by events taking place in a cardboard town built from those houses. This project kicked off with the aim of providing participants with an opportunity to raise their awareness of products and contemplate environmental and social issues at a personal level, through the experience of creating something with their own hands. By building houses on the lawn, creating their little town and living there, all the participants were able to take another look at the relationship between the earth and themselves.
On view in this 2nd installment of the exhibition are a series of photographs taken by a total of 60 participants, cardboard houses, as well as video footage of the production process and interviews.
Create, destroy, and live. What does our presence mean to our Planet Earth? How do our daily activities affect it? It's hoped that viewers will realize that humble art activities can be a platform for delivering important messages to our society.
