Uchiumi was born in Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, in 1977. Despite his age of early 30s, he has held a total of more than 60 solo and group exhibitions, many of which were held at public museums. Uchiumi has fully demonstrated his potential in last year's exhibition at Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, which was followed by the presentation of "Great Chilicosmos", comprised of 870 pieces of small paintings, exhibited and now housed in Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) as part of the museum collection. Now is his transitional stage as an abstract painter from a young emerging artist to a seasoned one.
His art works consist of numerous simple dots. Each dot, 40mm in diameter, is basically drawn by one vertical stroke. Carefully customized tips of his brushes, and his accurate hand to draw all dots in exact same size, evince his desire to create beautiful paintings. Uchiumi on the other hand says "the beauty of painting comes from the beauty of paints themselves". By carefully choosing paints to use, layering them, and applying them next to each other on his canvas, he draws out the depth of the material.
Uchiumi is also particular about the composition of an entire exhibition space, which is based on his belief that a painting is not concluded on its surface, but should rather be considered as part of the whole space where it's exhibited. He researches thoroughly about a gallery space before production process, putting a great deal of effort in finding out how the completed work will be presented in front of the viewer and how they will interact with each other. Although Uchiumi deals not with installation work but with two-dimensional medium, the space composed of his paintings exudes enormous energy as a whole.
"Colours Things" at Spiral Garden will present a large-scale painting entitled "Under the Colours" in the building's symbolic round space in a manner that it encloses the viewer, while also exhibiting "Unrestricted Field of View", which incorporates the gradation of colors.
