Directing his lens towards familiar objects and phenomena, Mamoru Sugiyama has been capturing ordinary things and everyday scenes. These works were first introduced in 2001 as a series entitled "Still Life", and then another series called "Nichijo sahanji -Daily Happening-" in 2006.
While continuing to take monochrome photographs that aim to bring out the presence of the subject through sharp contrasts between light and shadow, Sugiyama began to pay attention to nudes as his subject. A nude sits quietly, like a larva wriggling on a leaf. Naked as nature intended, the sitter is slowly transformed, as Sugiyama draws out reality and projects it upon his work. While these nude photographs are shot with a certain maintained distance as seen in his other series, they emphasize the realities of the "objects" and "lives" surrounding us and symbolize a state of metamorphosis -breaking out of one's shell and changing into a new self.
Over 30 monochrome photographs are on view. Sugiyama's new photo book "Metamorphosis" will be published also.
