Kunihiro Akinaga
Kunihiro Akinaga creates black ceramic objects that are reminiscent of architectural ironwork often used for ornamental purposes. Each one measures about 100 to 200 cm across. Stiffness and delicacy coexist in his abstract plant motifs, hinting at a sense of immense power swelling underneath its surface.

As the title "Growth" suggests, Akinaga's organic ceramic sculptures are an expression of the vitality of plants. While the organic form implies softness, the sharp edges and pointed tips create an aggressive impression. A floor piece which consists of reciprocally interwoven forms appears like some sort of futuristic device full of dynamic energy.

Akimoto studied ceramics at university with the intention of becoming a product designer, admiring the work of Masahiro Mori and Sori Yanagi. Growing up seeing lathe machines at his family's factory, he naturally became interested in the field of product design. This childhood experience also became a large influence in his ceramic work. Just like clay for Akimoto, metal is a flexible material whose form can be freely changed through the application of the appropriate technique. In his ceramic work, he expresses the flexibility and sharpness of metal, fusing it with the distinctive qualities of clay. In the past ten years since he began working with ceramics, Akimoto has exhibited at various shows and developed his unique style. This exhibition showcases four of Akimoto's recent works.
