"The Opening of Five Ports and the News" Exhibition

Newspark - The Japan Newspaper Museum
Finished
Yokohama celebrates the 150th anniversary of the opening of its port to foreign trade this June. In 1858, with the normalization of Japan-American relations and the signing of a commercial treaty between the two countries, five ports were opened: Yokohama, Nagasaki, Hakodate, Kobe and Niigata.

This exhibition, held with the special support of six newspapers (Kanagawa Shimbun, Nagasaki Shimbun, Hokkaido Shimbun, Hakodate Shimbun, Kobe Shimbun and Niigata Nippo), traces the significance of the opening of these ports through more than 200 archival items, including newspapers from the late Edo era. In addition, on display are pages and photos from the six newspapers that shed light on the history of the development of these five ports.

A commemorative lecture will also be held. See website for details.
