Artists

Hisao Demise
While Demise started his artistic career as an oil painter, he began tackling a painstaking method of "photo collage" in the 1970s in order to achieve expressions that he couldn't achieve with oil.

At a time when digital expression has entered the mainstream, Demise takes photographs of various objects and landscapes using negative film, and creates collages by placing those images symmetrically. He then takes photographs of the completed collages seen through a glass bead placed in front of his camera. He sometimes adds colors by hand.

On view in this exhibition are a total of 100 boxes in which not only photographs but materials used to produce photo images like toys, dolls and glass beads are displayed. In this age of digitization, Demise attempts to redefine the roots of art.
