"Masterpieces of Modern Mexican Painting" Exhibition

Setagaya Art Museum
Finished
In Mexico, land of sun and revolution, art was used to show the changes in society after independence from colonial rule. The mural movement, which espoused revolutionary ideals, conveyed strong social messages, raising awareness of national history and social conditions, while developing an original style of painting. Artists were concerned with expressing national character but they continued to paint universal themes as well as achieving deeply personal forms of expression. Mexican painting fascinates us today because of its capacity for including many complex historical events in a single picture. Taking “The Road to Modernism” as a theme, this exhibition explores the development of modern Mexican painting with about 70 works borrowed from Mexican museums and individual collectors.
